Emergency Fire Rehabilitation Subgroup

In order to provide additional expertise, and invite the groups with concerns into the evaluation process, the Resource Advisory Council decided to form a Subgroup to assist them in their process of evaluating the fire rehab issue. In addition to the Paiute Indian Tribe, representatives from the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) were invited to serve on the Subgroup. Unfortunately SUWA declined the invitation. Later, however, after the Subgroup had formed, SUWA did request that the BLM include Dr. Ron Lanner in the review process. Dr. Lanner, a long-time opponent of chaining, was contacted and eventually joined the Subgroup on a field tour and public meeting with the RAC on August 24, 1997. Even though Dr. Lanner did reiterate his strong objection to the chaining of live trees, he did conclude that "chaining to cover the seed was appropriate and effective" in areas that had burned and trees and shrubs had been killed by fire.
